Abstract

SUMMARY. It has been shown previously that there is a pattern of soil properties around an individual tree, with variation out from the tree in all directions. From this it may be hypothesized that there is a detailed pattern of soil properties corresponding to the vegetation pattern. This hypothesis is tested for a number of sites in the Forest of Dean under deciduous trees and conifers, by examining the variability of six soil properties and relating this to variability in the spacing and size of the trees. The results largely support the hypothesis, with the greatest soil variability in the sites with the greatest variability of vegetation, the deciduous woodlands.
