Abstract

My return to Dhaka in the summer of 1988 to contribute to a UNDP-financed review of the agricultural sector in Bangladesh was bound to stimulate reflections on the changes since my first visit to the then East Pakistan over twenty-five years ago. And since one of my responsibilities in that assignment was to provide some perspectives on the role of agriculture in Bangladesh’s future development, I found myself seeking to recall what hopes, fears and expectations were prevalent then for East Pakistan’s economic future and how they compare with Bangladesh’s actual experience.1 KeywordsSaving RateHigh Yielding VarietyInternational Food Policy Research InstituteRural Labour ForceRural Labour MarketThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
