Abstract

Past and present rates of regional erosion are calculated for the Appalachian, Mississippi, and Himalayan regions. The present rate of erosion of the Mississippi region is about the same as the average rate during the last years. The average rate of erosion of the Appalachian region during the last years is 7.8 times as fast as at present. The average rate of erosion of the Himalaya region during the past years is only 0.02 of the present rate. The fastest average rate observed is about 20 cm/103 years, obtained in the Himalaya region for the past years and also in the Rocky Mountain region for the years of Upper Cretaceous time. The proportion of sediment permanently lost from the continents to abyssal plains is: Appalachian region, 17 per cent; Mississippi region, 8 per cent; and Himalaya region, possibly 49 per cent. Losses of these magnitudes cannot have occurred during much of the geological past.
