This survey has been envisaged as historiographic, not bibliographic. Therefore, we have deemed it permissible to confine ourselves to what we regard as the most significant works on the subject with which we are concerned. The chronological framework of the article was defined in the light of the changes observed in recent Soviet historical literature that is concerned with the international contacts of Ancient Rus.
