Abstract

The lecture describes the lecturer's personal experiences from a childhood with normally hearing parents and three brothers, who, like the lecturer, have a congenital hearing impairment. Reference is made to school life with hearing children. The initial advantage in knowledge and social performance at the onset of school is lost after 4 years at the transition from primary to secondary school. The consequences of this combined with the family pattern are related to the personal and social development. Another part of the lecture describes the problems that are experienced as significant in the actual work situation, and which may be explained in the hearing handicap combined with the upbringing.
