Abstract

The evidence available concerning the best preserved and most beautiful of all Greek theatres is examined and evaluated. A dating scheme is presented which suggests that the theatre at Epidaurus is even further removed in time from the theatre structures of the classical era even though the Epidaurus building reflects the fifth century ideal and demonstrates the unique conditions for which the Greek playwright wrote.
