Abstract

Scheduled Castes are considered outcastes and categorised as untouchables. They remain at the bottom of the social hierarchy and are socially deprived, discriminated and exploited by the upper castes. Problems of the Scheduled Castes are many in India. But this study attempts to depict only some of the problems that are affecting the way of life of the Scheduled Castes. Though the Government has undertaken many initiatives to uplift the standard of living among the Scheduled Castes in India and West Bengal in particular ven; little headway has been achieved in this respect. A majority of them still remain backward in terms of socio‐economic condition, education, housing, health and hygiene. This paper highlights the basic problems faced by the Scheduled Castes in West Bengal and suggests that a lot still needs to be done by the government.
