Abstract

The detailed examination of two valleys and a more general study of erosion levels of south Hertfordshire suggest that three or more stages are present in the drainage pattern and that these are related to successive courses of a proto-Thames. Ice diversion of the main drainage has produced a series of stream alignments varying between east-north-east and south-south-west. The gradual advance of the ice-lobe towards Finchley sequentially blocked valleys near Northaw, Barnet and Totteridge, causing overspill into the Brent drainage.
