Abstract

Abstract Vowel harmony in Turkish has been discussed quite extensively in the literature. The commonly agreed view is the one which suggests the separation of root harmony from suffix harmony because the latter is productive while the former is not. This paper is an attempt to evaluate the above view. Three phonological experiments are conducted to test the native speakers’ judgment on the productivity of vowel harmony in suffixes and different types of roots. The results suggest that the previous views on Turkish vowel harmony should be drastically altered.
