Abstract

A noncytopathic virus (RIF) which induces resistance to in vitro infection of chicken embryo cells by the Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) was partially characterized. RIF could not be distinguished from RSV on the basis of ultraviolet light sensitivity, ether sensitivity, thermal stability, or ultrafiltration. An earlier report of the immunological relationship of RIF and RSV was confirmed. Cross-absorption studies showed that RIF and RSV are similar but not identical in their antigenic makeup. Neutralization studies with an array of sera failed to reveal any immunological differences between RIF and RPL12, a classic strain of visceral lymphomatosis virus. It was concluded that RIF is a strain of visceral lymphomatosis virus.
