Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size Additional informationNotes on contributorsPat RickwoodThis article by Pat Rickwood, Senior Counsellor in the West Midlands Region of the Open University UK, is based on a study of a group of OU students who chose to continue their studies elsewhere. The notion of transfer is shown to be ambiguous, possessing different aspects which are not easily reconciled. Leaving the OU often allowed for a quicker progress to a more specialised degree, but it also meant giving up a very efficient system which delivered well‐supported, high quality learning. Many of the transferees were to varying extents disappointed by their campus experience as full‐time students.
