Abstract

Using a range of elements of differing atomic number the variation in intensity of backscattered electrons with energy of the incident β-particles has been measured with a β-spectrometer. The method also allows observations to be made about the variation in energy of backscattered electrons with atomic number. The presence of high-energy electrons in the emergent spectrum is in conflict with experiments based on absorption methods of energy differentiation. The value of energy selection in practical applications of β-backscattering is noted.
