Abstract

A study on the life cycle and population dynamics of a terrestrial amphipod Talitroides topitotum in Hong Kong revealed that T. topitotum was semelparous with an average life span of ten months, and had three to four generations per year. Talitroides topitotum could produce up to two broods during its life time with an average brood size of 3·4 eggs, and an average egg size of 0·15 mm3. The male/female ratios were significantly less than unity in April. We suggest that the biased sex ratios could be a result of a difference in longevity between the sexes. The possible adaptive significance of this was discussed.
