Abstract

The physical and chemical parameters of semen quality were studied in rams of the Chokla, Malpura and Nali breeds, that had genetically determined high (HK) and low potassium (LK) levels in the blood. Semen volume and motility were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in LK rams of the Malpura and Nali, but not in the Chokla breeds. In the pooled samples, when breed was disregarded, LK rams had higher semen volume as well as proportion of live sperm (P < 0.05) and motility (P < 0.01). In all breeds examined, the blood sodium levels were higher (P < 0.01) in the LK rams. There was no difference among breeds or genetic groups in the hematocrit or spermatocrit values, although the latter were usually higher than the former.
