Abstract

The interpretative schemes hitherto advanced in sociology do not account for the character of social relations found in ideological groups; that is, in groups which require that their members orient themselves to one another primarily in terms of some central symbols and ideas-be they those of Zion, patrie, Volk, narod, or proletariat. Drawing upon historical evidence, this essay explores and tentatively conceptualized the basic modalities of ideological relationship and orientation.
