Abstract
Chiu et al. [Japan Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Vol. 21 (2004), pp. 375–389] consider the economic production quantity EPQ model with a random defective rate and an imperfect rework process. They assume that (A) The defective rate x is a random variable, and (B) Shortages are not permitted. This paper reveals that both assumptions (A) and (B) will yield unsolved shortcomings for their model. The main purpose of this paper is to illustrate why the validity of the EPQ model of Chiu et al. [3] is questionable. Using the same arguments as in Chiu et al. [3], we show that validities of the EPQ models of Chiu and Chiu [4] and Chiu and Chiu [5] are questionable as well.
