Abstract

Summary Fluorescent Concanavalin A (Con A) was used to demonstrate the presence of Con A binding sites on free cells of some invertebrates: Halichondria panicea , Sipunculus nudus , Siphonosoma arcassonense , Cancer pagurus , Carcinus maenas , Aplysia fasciata , Leptosynapta inhaerens and Asterias rubens . Only leukocytes of Siphonosoma arcassonense and Cancer pagurus showed specific membrane fluorescence. After treatment with trypsin, cells of Halichondria panicea also exhibited receptors. Cell types other than leukocytes, such as erythrocytes, urn cells and sexual cells in Siphonosoma arcassonense and sexual cells in Cancer pagurus were also labelled.
