Abstract

The present study proposes to describe some peculiarities about the history and tradition ofmullet Mugil liza Valenciennes (1836) fishing in Brazil. The present work is qualitative,descriptive and, exploratory, highlighting some historical facts relevant to the time range of1945 to 2014. It was concluded that the mullet fishing Mugil liza, Valenciennes, (1836) inBrazil: 1) is based on strong Portuguese and indigenous influences; 2) is based on thetradition of a cooperative effort of art, technique, and subjective abilities; 3) has maintainedover the centuries the “Mullet Festival” along coastal regions of southern and southeasternBrazil; and 4) depends on initiatives by official organizations and organized civil society touse sustainable exploitation, guaranteeing the preservation of the species and the marineecosystem.
