Abstract
The synthesis of some new furanones starting from three γ-keto acids, β-(3,4-dimethylbenzoyl)acrylic acid, β-(2,4-dimethylbenzoyl)acrylic acid and β-(2,5-dimethylbenzoyl)acrylic acid is described. Each acid is condensed with various phenols using catalytic quantity of sulphuric acid as condensing agent to get the furanones. The structures of synthesized compounds have been elucidated by elemental analysis, spectral data and chemical reactions. Some of the synthesized compounds have been evaluated for their antimicrobial activities also.
