Abstract

Possibilities for the industrial utilisation of waste from fibre crops such as jute and sisal and of fibre waste from fruit plants such as banana and pineapple are described. Research leading to the production of newsprint, paper and particle boards, kraft paper and viscose rayon from jute stick, an agricultural waste, is summarised. Utilisation of barky jute by microbiological softening, thereby eliminating wastage as ‘root cuttings’, has also been successful. Isolation of hecogenin, was and pectin, used by the pharmaceutical industry, from sisal pulp is reported. Investigations on the industrial use of banana fibre and pineapple leaf fibre, fibrous wastes from fruit plantations, are outlined.
