Abstract

Abstract Techniques are described for assessing the quality of cultured striped bass (Morone saxatilis) for use in laboratory studies. Larval striped bass can be screened for swim bladder inflation by their responses to anesthesia with tricaine (MS-222) or benzocaine. Typical values for blood chemistry, condition factor, and responses to a saltwater challenge were established for normal fish larger than 90 mm. Neither blood chemistry measurements, nor liver anatomy, nor body cavity fat correlated well with the incidence of uninflated swim bladders. Extremely low plasma chlorides were found in some fish without inflated swim bladders. Blood characteristics of normal fish fell within reported ranges for hematocrit and total plasma proteins.
