Abstract
1. 1. Respiratory mechanics were evaluated for the total pulmonary system of the turtle Mauremys casplca. 2. 2. Compliance (3.56 ml/cm H 2O) and hysteresis (2.99cm) values are comparable to those of reptiles with similar pulmonary structure. 3. 3. Maximal lung volume, resting lung volume, end-inspiratory lung volume and body volume, were determined. 4. 4. The slope of the relationship of these parameters with body weight reaches values until twice that of other turtles.
