Abstract

Finite strain determined from R f/φ analysis of deformed ellipse distributions cannot be separated into compactional and tectonic parts on the basis of population asymmetry about the orientational mean, as was originally suggested. Furthermore, where there is a ductility contrast between objects and matrix, R f/φ analysis yields an invalid estimate of the strain suffered by the objects.
