Abstract

This paper includes three kinds of in-situ measurements for designing rock construction in the fields of both civil and mining engineering. (1) in-situ block shear tests, acoustic emission in addition to the vertical and horizontal displacements of the block is measured to investigate more accurately the fracture initiation of rock mass by analysing the rate of acoustic emission. (2) a crack detector of ultrasonic pulse type has been developed for the borehole measurement and some in-situ tests on the crack distribution and the sonic velocity change along the borehole axis are carried out at a mine, a quarry, a tunnel, etc. (3) the strains in the so-called concrete support are monitored for more than two years at one of the black ore mines in order to know the effect of mining excavations on the rock presure around the haulage drift in the vicinity of working faces.
