Abstract

Soviet and the American literary scholar in these two areasthe method or approach each applies in engaging the literary work, and then the effect of this approach on the literary tradition to which the work is related. Although most of these observations are based on personal experience gained while studying Russian literature as a graduate exchange student in the Soviet Union, nevertheless, I think they can be taken as representative of two divergent attitudes toward the study of literature.
