Abstract

This paper gives a brief description of some of the factors which influence the track registration and development characteristics of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). The results of experiments carried out in this direction indicate that systematic pre- and (in some cases) post-irradiation treatments of detectors, and their careful handling during and after the etching process can improve the signal-to-noise ratio remarkably. It was also observed that a strict control of environmental conditions during and after irradiation and exactly identical etching conditions are extremely necessary for reproducible results in experiments employing SSNTDs.
