SOME GRAPHIC AND ORTHOGRAPHIC FEATURES OF THE ODESSA COPY OF THE NEW BULGARIAN TRANSLATION OF THE “SMALL CATECHISMOS” BY THEODOR THE STUDITE

Abstract

Summary. The aim of the article is to consider the graphic and orthographical features of the New Bulgarian translation of “Catechismos” written by Theodore the Studite, the outstanding Byzantine religious and public figure and the author of the monastery charter. The object of the research is copy of the "Small Catechismos" of the 18th century by anonymous scribe which is part of a convolute and kept in the collection of manuscripts and early printed editions (Odessa National Scientific Library, no.1/154), the subject – features of the graphic-spelling system of the copy, whose description is an important criterion and prerequisite for identifying the written layers. The article describes the history of the study of this translation among the Slavs; the great contribution of professor D. S. Ishchenko to the development of this issue is determined; the complex of graphemes used in the copy and the orthographic principles of their use are considered; the typical phonetic phenomena and changes that received written fixation in the copy are analyzed; the local markers are outlined. The results of the study allow us to draw the following conclusions: the Odessa copy of "Small Catechismos" by Theodore the Studite has several written layers (medieval Bulgarian or Tarnovo-Resavian, Serbian and East Slavic) with a partial inclusion of Bulgarian dialect features. This fact determines important aspects of the further research. To clarify the ethnolinguistic attribution of the copy, it is necessary to carry out an in-depth study of its paleographic, accentological, grammatical, syntactic, lexical features, as well as a thorough textual analysis of copies similar in composition. Textual research should be preceded, first of all, by the identification of copies containing this translation.
