Abstract

Regional geochemical reconnaissance by stream sediment sampling, carried out primarily for utilitarian purposes, can also yield information of interest from the fundamental geological point of view. Examples are given from the results of applied research carried out at Imperial College indicating an ancillary geological role for such surveys in geological mapping, stratigraphy, palaeogeography, metamorphic geology and the detection and delineation of geochemical provinces. In addition, regional data concerning the composition of active stream sediments must contribute to the better understanding of the geochemical cycle as a whole.
