Abstract

This familiar rust occurs plentifully on Claytonia virginica in south? ern Ontario (Essex to Niagara Peninsulas) where this host is common. Elsewhere in the beech-maple forests of southern Quebec and Ontario it occurs commonly on the widespread C. caroliniana. In Gatineau Co., Quebec, it has been traced to Lac Philippe, some 15 mi. NW of Ottawa. Here the beech-maple begins to give way to mixed forest and Claytonia becomes very scarce. It thus appears that in eastern Ontario and west? ern Quebec P. mariae-wilsoniae is virtually co-extensive with its host, in contrast with the known distribution of the other two rusts attacking this plant. An amplified description follows.
