Abstract

A review is given of the physical and physiological factors relevant to the analysis and synthesis of television pictures. The first part of the paper summarizes the colorimetric requirements and describes the simultaneous and sequential methods. The second part deals with measurement technique, including camera-tube spectral sensitivity and cathode-ray-tube emission spectra, and gives some typical results. The third section deals with the physiological effects of flicker, acuity and colour discrimination, and describes the fundamental bases of certain bandwidth-saving techniques.
