Abstract

Summary. Mean hourly values have been analysed month by month for a number of stations for which long runs of data are available. It is found that there is an annual variation in the M2 lunar tide, there being a global enhancement of the tide around January. There is also some evidence from the phase changes with latitude that, near the solstices, the lunar current system consists not of pairs of vortices, one in each hemisphere, but of single vortices with foci in the summer hemisphere.
