Abstract

Single crystals of Y3Fe5−xCrxO12 with 0 < x < 0.43 have been grown by the fluxed melt technique using PbOPbF2B2O3 as the flux. The molar ratio of PbO/PbF2 was varied between 1.0 and 0.60 and it was found that at a given temperature the solubility of Cr2O3 increased with PbF2 content. The flux with PbO/PbF2 = 0.70 gave the best results. The effect of crucible size on garnet crystallisation was shown to be related to evaporation rate. When the Cr2O3 content in the melt exceeded 1 mole% no garnet phase could be crystallized for small crucibles (50 cm3), whereas garnets crystallized when bigger crucibles (100 cm3) were employed. Electron probe analysis of a section of a crystal did not reveal any gradient of Cr2O3 concentration between the center of the crystal and its surface.
