Abstract

Auditory perception of 180 bi-syllabic Finnish words used in clinical speech audiometry is analysed on the basis of the responses of 20 normally hearing subjects in an attempt to evaluate the effect of some factors on word discrimination, such as: (a) frequency occurrence of test words, (b) word length in number of phonemes, (c) phonetic structure, and (d) number of alternative response words. The importance of factors which contribute to intrinsic and extrinsic redundancy of speech perception is pointed out.
