Abstract

A study is conducted in developing a process of automatic design based on the 5th order aberration theory. Relating to this study two sorts of experiments are made: 1) Three minimization methods, i.e., the steepest descent method, the method of least squares and the method of damped least squares are compared one another with the use of a simplified optical model. The last one is found as the most suitable method for the present purpose. 2) Examination is done on a reasonable way to locate the starting point of automatic design. Approximate solutions obtained by the “thin sub-system analysis” in the 3rd order region can be used successfully as the starting points. The design process is described of a Gauss-type lens after the presently proposed method.
