Abstract

An analysis of 48 atmospherics waveforms has been made to yield the distances of origin and the frequency-amplitude spectra. By using the formula for the resultant field strength of the dominant mode in the Earth-ionosphere wave-guide, attenuation coefficients for the frequency range of 3–15 kHz have been determined and compared with the results of earlier workers and with theory. Having determined the attenuation coefficients, the average source-spectrum is calculated back and is discussed in relation to the excitation factor.
