Abstract

SummaryEvaluations and statistical comparisons have been made for various coating systems given mobile exposures in Birmingham and Cleveland. It is shown that static exposure and accelerated test results do not in all cases correspond with those obtained by mobile exposure. Systems evaluated were single and multiple layer nickel: copper-t-nickel: standard, crack-free and microporous chromium. Crack-free chromium was beneficial in Birmingham but not in Cleveland. Duplex nickel was more beneficial in Cleveland than in Birmingham. Detail is given on methods of evaluating corrosion results. The relation between sulphur content, potential and corrosion of nickel deposits is discussed. While it is not known if only a single mechanism is involved, both the open circuit potential and corrosion rate of single deposits appear to be functions of the logarithm of sulphur content.
