Abstract

Aspergillus flavus Link grew and sporulated best at 35°. The optimum pH for growth was 7·5 and for sporulation 6·5. Sucrose was the best single source of carbon for growth and sporulation but was inferior to a sucrose/lactose mixture (15:15 m m ). Greatest growth was obtained on l -glutamic acid and best sporulation was on ammonium nitrate. During utilization of sucrose, the carbohydrates in the mycelium included fructose, glucose, trehalose and myoinositol. When grown on carboxymethylcellulose as the sole carbon source, the culture filtrate of A. flavus exhibited Cx cellulase activity.
