Abstract

A large portion of the land surface in the Middle East arid and semi-arid climate zone has a high salt concentration. The presence of salt in the soil profile influences its geotechnical properties. This paper discusses local practices and techniques used to improve some of the engineering properties of salina soil similar to that found in Saudi Arabia. The effectiveness of using portland cement to improve the behaviour of salina sand was investigated. The best lime percent to improve the behaviour of fine desert salina was determined. The effectiveness of vibro-replacement, dynamic consolidation techniques in improving the properties of salina beds was evaluated. It is suggested that both portland cement and lime in quantities as little as 5% by weight improves salina behaviour significantly. While dynamic consolidation with sand pillar seems to give satisfactory results in treating muddy deep salina beds.
