Abstract

Summary A mathematical model is used to investigate the effect of topographical changes on the structure of the tidal flow and residual current system in a river estuary. Calculations are performed for an estuary bounded at its landward end by a tidal barrier. It is suggested that the resulting general conclusions may be of value in an appraisal of the consequences of proposed estuarial engineering schemes.
