Abstract

The effects of artificial rearing of lambs on the development of social behavior and growth were determined by rearing lambs (1) in a flock, (2) individually with a ewe, (3) artificially with other lambs, and (4) artificially as individuals. Selected aspects of the lambs' behavioral development were determined by placing the lambs individually in a series of social and nonsocial test conditions each week from 1 to 8 weeks of age. Behavior during testing was strongly dependent on rearing environment.
