Abstract

Using a specially constructed calibration chamber, the investigators studied the effects of static charge in relation to the efficiency of 10-mm cyclone prefilters for dust samplers. The average coefficient of variation for four types of 10-mm cyclones was found to be approximately 10%. Differences appear to be caused by electrostatic fields resulting from excess charge deposited on the surfaces of the dielectric cyclones tested. Stainless steel cyclones performed best under laboratory tests, however they are heavy and expensive. An inexpensive, lightweight, conductive material is indicated as desirable for construction! of the cyclones.
