Abstract

This paper discusses the educational value of focusing on portrayals of the emotional dynamics and conflicts of biblical characters in Hebrew biblical and rabbinic midrashic texts. Attention to these aspects of the texts can increase student interest, provide useful insight into human nature, enhance self‐understanding, facilitate significant personal transformation, and clarify the meaning and message of the texts. Examples are provided from biblical and rabbinic narratives, several Psalms, and the Book of Job. Teachers need to adapt the use of this approach to their broader educational objectives and institutional settings.
