Abstract

The classification of the Eastern gorilla population of the Mt. Kahuzi area is attempted. Comparison with the Virunga Volcano and Eastern Lowland populations by skull measurement data indicates an intermediate position. Comparison of mandible data however points to a linkage between the Mt. Kahuzi and Eastern Lowland popu lations. This conclusion is bolstered by several geographical facts and by data on defecation habits among the three Eastern gorilla populations. The greater probability of a connection between the Mt. Kahuzi and the Eastern Lowland gorilla seems to be evident.
