Abstract

A knowledge of the cultural characteristics of individual species of fungi is essential for a complete understanding of the group as a whole. A summary of the present status of Gasteromycetes in culture was given by the writer in previotus papers (Swartz, I928, I929, I933); and it is hoped that the following notes on the culture of nine species of Lycoperdaceae may add something of value. The following species, each collected in its own characteristic habitat, were successfully cultured from tissue: Lycoperdon pyriforme (Schaeff.) Pers.; Lycoperdon gemmatum Batsch.-auct. pl.; Lycoperdon glabellum Pk.; Lycoperdon pulcherrimum Berk.; Calvatia saccata Fr. sensu Lloyd; Calvatia gigantea Batsch.; Calvatia caelata (Bull.) Fr.; Calvatia cyathiformis (Bosc.) Morg.; Bovista plumbea (Pers.) Fr.
