Abstract

The paper reviews critical high-temperature topics in fossil-fired energy conversion, first comparing today's requirements with those of a decade ago. The paper then discusses the current topics of concern in conventional pulverised coal boilers, in fluidised bed combustors, in gasifiers, in refuse incinerators and in high-temperature (above 1100 °C) heat exchangers. Except for the latter, it is emphasised that the current temperature range of interest is 300–700 °C lower than a decade ago.
