Abstract

Planning for the development of a natural resource must recognize the environmental constraints of that location of resource. Agricultural industries which are based on plant production are developed mainly within soil and climatic limitations. The irrigation potential of about 2.5 million hectares in east-central Alberta, between Hanna and the Saskatchewan border is assessed in terms of these limitations. There is a brief discussion of various soil parameters such as texture, structure and salinity, and the role of soil classification and topography. The land resource in east-central Alberta is broadly described within a physiographic framework which recognizes two principal regions. First are the relatively smooth plains of the western part with solonetzic soils. It has low irrigation potential with poor soil characteristics as the main limiting factor. Second are the uplands and plains in the eastern portion dominated by Chernozemic soils. This area has moderate potential with topography being the princ...
