Abstract

The failure to take into account the likely persistent effects of previous exposure to endogenous hormones on cell metabolism and ultrastructure in experiments involving the treatment of presoaked excised tissues with exogenous hormones has caused considerable confusion in the interpretation of data in the hormone literature. To study the effect of an exogenous hormone treatment on excised tissue, it is important to know whether this hormone was endogenously present before excision and to determine precisely the nature and persistance of its effects on the tissue at the time of exogenous treatment. It is also important to know the effects of presoaking in water on the concentration of the endogenous hormone. These considerations are critical in comparing latent periods for responses to hormones in various tissues.
