Abstract

A sociologist may not be the best commentator on historical ex? periences, for he tends to look at history from a sociological perspec? tive, and will ask of it a series of sociological questions, rather than historical ones. But having been invited to comment in this special issue of the Review, I shall take the opportunity to suggest what I think are some of the crucial questions to be answered by research in Italian migration history. The first set of questions seemj to me to be those related to the characteristics and experiences of the immigrants and their children. In this regard, the following questions appear primary:
