Abstract

Presentation of a case of myositis ossificans circumscripta (probably post-traumatic) in a femur found in a medieval burial ground. The specimen was studied macroscopically, radiologically and histologically (in particular by means of microradiography). A methodology for skeletal paleopathology is discussed. Mention is made of the necessity of suitable and thorough anatomo-pathological examination (including roentgenograms and whenever possible, macroscopic and histological sections) and of making the diagnosis in terms of modern nosography.
