Abstract
Artnur Barber has gained an estimable following in certain quarters in the academic community in recent years as one of the ablest thinkers? and one of those officials most vitally concerned with humanitarian values ?in the Pentagon. It is widely said of him that he typically thinks untypical thoughts and then boldly introduces his iconclastic ideas to highlevel conformists in the Washington area. Last December, however, he journeyed to California and undertook to train his weapons on some of the icons of that very academic community which has viewed him with so much admiration. Such a confrontation between a wise man and his learned admirers should certainly have been a useful experience for all concerned, but, unfortunately, the paper that Mr. Barber delivered on that occasion did not wholly support its author's credentials and advance billing. The paper did support another version of his reputation?a maverick gadfly in the Pentagon stable?but it left something to be desired in terms of wisdom and knowledge of subject.
